about (who I am)
I am a space maker. I create unique and usable spaces in the landscape. My inspirations come from nature and in particular, landforms. That’s how I envision spaces. I am not influenced by trend or historic garden periods although I enjoy being educated in the history of both, architecture and landscape architecture.
I believe I have become part artist and part engineer. Actually, I am ALL of both, not just part. Like an artist, I paint my visions. My canvas is the outdoor environment. But, my work is very similar conceptual to an artist capturing a scene where the art flows through the eyes and the brain and the heart, emerges from the brush in his hand, onto the paint on the canvas. The only difference is my art is an environmental media and becomes a built environment.
My profession also requires that the art get translated into documents that contractors can build from. I love this phase of the design process just as much. This is where the artistic right side of the brain switches over the left.
I love all aspects of this profession. The art and the engineering and the science that is integral in my work. A good landscape architect must be accomplished in all aspects to perform and equitable design to the environment and for the patron who is commissioning me and placing their trust in that I will create a worthy environment that will give pleasure for many years.
But, without a doubt, the part I love the most about my wonderful life is the relationships with my clients which has enriched my journey in ways I never imagined.
I AM A SPACE MAKER. I CREATE UNIQUE SPACES. I AM INSPIRED BY NATURE AND LANDFORM. THAT’S HOW I CREATE MY SPACES. MY VISIONS COME FROM NATURE. I AM NOT INFLUENCED BY TREND OR HISTORIC GARDEN PERIODS LIKE I SEE IN MANY OF MY COLLEGUES.
I AM LIKE LIKE A PAINTING ARTIST WHO IS TAKING IN A SCENE AND SOMEHOW THROUGH THE PROCESS OF SEEING IT, HOW IT’S INTERPRETED FROM MY EYES THROUGH MY BRAIN AND HEART AND OUT MY HAND AND BRUSH ONTO THE CANVAS HE PAINTS A MASTERPIECE.
I AM PART ARTIST AND PART ENGINEER. ACTUALLY, I AM ALL OF BOTH, NOT JUST PART. I PAINT MY VISIONS AND THEN I TRANSLATE IT INTO BUILDABLE DOCUMENTS. VERY TECHNICAL. I LOVE BOTH ASPECTS OF THIS PROFESSION. THE ART AND THE ENGINEERING. ACTUALLY, THERE IS SCIENCE THAT IS INTEGRAL IN MY PROFESSION AND HAS TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ON EVERY PROJECT. SO TO BE ABLE TO DO ALL THREE ASPECTS WELL IS RARE. JUST SAYING.
